While other 2K QHD dash cams boast Sony STARVIS 2.0 only for its front, the VIOFO A229 Plus 3-CH also sports the same image sensor for its rear. Equipped with the 5MP IMX 675 with 2.5x better dynamic range and light sensitivity, the A229 Plus records crisper and more vibrant footage, day and night. Beyond that, it also comes with an IR camera that records Full HD, clearly capturing the entire cabin scene without overexposure, highly recommended for Uber, Lyft, taxis, and fleets.

Equipped with multi-exposure HDR for both front and rear, the VIOFO A229 Plus 3-CH records up to 2K QHD @ 60 FPS at 140º field of view ahead, and 2K QHD @ 30 FPS for its rear at 160º field of view and Full HD 1080p @ 30 FPS for its interior at 150º for wide coverage. Multiple Parking Mode Options

Parking Modes guard your car even when you’re not there, giving you peace of mind every day, everywhere. Beyond motion detection, the VIOFO A229 Plus 3-CH also highlights Buffered Parking Mode. This means that when impact is detected, the dash cam will switch to standard event recording, including the 15 seconds before and 30 seconds after the collision. Moreover, VIOFO’s parking mode options also include:  

  • Auto Event Detection automatically starts recording when movement or impacts are detected.

  • Time Lapse records video continuously at low frames rates to reduce recording size.

  • Low Bitrate Mode continues recording audio and video normally in parking mode, except for using a high compression ratio which allows extended recording times, for example, overnight recording without overwriting the recordings from the previous day.

Great dash cam, reliable

I’ve been very impressed with the Viofo A229 Plus 2K QHD 3-channel dash cam. I have it hardwired directly to my vehicle’s fuse box, and it has started up reliably every time. Installation was straightforward, and the overall performance has been excellent.

Image quality is a major improvement compared with my previous Viofo A119 V3, which I have been using for many years and which is still working reliably. The A229 Plus has noticeably better nighttime performance, especially when dealing with glare from headlights and street lighting. It also does a much better job capturing license plates in challenging lighting conditions.

The built-in Wi-Fi is another feature I really appreciate. Being able to quickly access clips on my phone, preview footage without needing to remove the memory card, and share important recordings immediately is extremely convenient. With my older A119 V3, I needed a computer or a USB-C card reader adapter to access footage, which was much less practical when dealing with a roadside incident.

While there are higher-resolution and more premium dash cams available, I think the A229 Plus offers an excellent balance of image quality, features, and value. For most drivers, the footage quality is more than sufficient to document accidents, establish fault, and provide peace of mind while on the road.

Overall, this has been a significant upgrade from my previous dash cam, and I would highly recommend it.

So far the quality seems pretty good! Only downside is the app/apps for the Viofo Dashcams. I dont expect them to be perfect or great, but the first day i had access to the live preview and all of a sudden it stopped working on day 2 of being installed. The other thing is the VHB falling off the rear view camera (it stuck well to the window but its falling of the plastic of the camera). Other than that its working well. Quality during day and night good thanks to the STARVIS2

For the app side, we recommend using only the newer VIOFO Dashcam app with the red icon, as that is the current app that's actively being updated, and many connectivity issues can often be resolved with a few simple setup adjustments. As for the rear camera adhesive, if the spare mounting adhesive included in the box does not resolve the issue and it keeps happening, that would be covered under warranty. Mixed feelings.....

My experience is mostly my fault. I didn't realize that the camera was constantly drawing power from the batteries while in park mode. I thought that the unit mainly went to sleep and was awakened by any g-force type bumping that occured, which would save batter power. Jeeps are battery hungry vehicles. If you draw down the auxiliary battery too many times the main battery will also die and vice versa. I opted to have the unit shut down completely because of this misperception. Which basically defeats having the parking mode. Although I can turn it back on if I am parking in a questionable area. Also it definitely takes hours to install the front, back and parking mode cables. And since there isn't any definitive guide available you are left with watching YouTube videos to try and figure an installation strategy. It may be worth while to have it installed by someone that does these kinds of installations on a regular basis. Other than the above the camera works as expected.

Thanks for your detailed feedback. We understand where the frustration is coming from, especially with how parking mode was expected to behave. In a proper setup, the camera should not drain the battery to that extent, even on vehicles like Jeeps. It’s often related to how the hardwire kit is configured. The yellow wire should be connected to switched ACC power and the red wire to constant power. It’s also important to check the low voltage cutoff, we typically recommend setting it to 12.2V to help prevent battery drain. Setting a parking mode timer on the camera can also help limit how long it stays active. If you’re aiming for a setup that only records on impact, you can use auto event detection and lower the motion sensitivity to zero so it behaves more like a sleep mode until a trigger occurs. We agree installation can take some time, especially for a first setup, and professional installation is always a good option for a cleaner and more optimized result. High Quality

This thing felt like quality materials and not cheap. Excellent video quality. Chose to hard wire to my fuse box for park mode feature. Already one crash on video and uploaded to local PD evidence site. Only issue I have, and nothing that VIOFO controls, is my android car play Bluetooth app has to be shut off or disabled to allow me to connect to dash cam to down load videos to phone.

This was a grest upgrade from my old dash cam. Instillation was straight forward. The voice control works perfectly and the app is basic but in a good, functional way.

NIce, but.....

The main front unit is a nice size and seems fine, although I haven't really checked to see if it is "actually working" YET. The rear camera is a bit inflexible as to not being able to change the side to side angle of the camera on the rear window. With the length of the cable for this rear cam, I cannot get my camera to the middle of the curved rear window. If the cable were even a foot longer it would have solved this problem for me.

Great quality, pretty easy to install

I've been very impressed with the quality of this dashcam, and I'm glad it uses USB-C for power and to connect the front and rear cameras. The installation was pretty easy, with the only issue being that the included cable used to provide power to the front camera was barely long enough when I connected it to the cigarette lighter plug in the rear of my SUV.

How well does it work in lower temperatures? I see that the operating temperatures are set at -20, where I live, it can get down to -45C. So what happens at that temperature?
