BMW Advanced Car Eye 2.0: Features and Alternatives

BMW accessory recording, parking and alternative setups

ACE 2.0 or BMW Drive Recorder?

BMW Advanced Car Eye 2.0 is a separate camera accessory. BMW Drive Recorder uses the vehicle’s built-in cameras on suitably equipped vehicles. They are different systems, so start with the equipment and functions your BMW actually has.

Do not use the car’s year alone to decide compatibility. Ask a BMW specialist to check your exact vehicle, accessory part number and installation requirements. BMW’s ACE 2.0 manual specifies installation by a BMW workshop. For general power and cable-routing considerations, see our BMW and Audi dash cam installation guide.

ACE 2.0 offers nearby phone access over its own Wi-Fi connection. That does not make Drive Recorder universally USB-only: BMW’s later Drive Recorder documentation includes export by USB or smartphone, depending on the vehicle and software. Compare your actual equipment before paying for a second recording system.

For BMW’s own explanations, see the BMW Drive Recorder video (Operating System 7) and the BMW Advanced Car Eye 3.0 video (different model).

What ACE 2.0 records

The original ACE 2.0 system documents driving and selected parking events with front and rear cameras. Its manual specifies 1920 × 1080, or 1080P FHD, recording. With both cameras enabled, the listed front rate is 30 FPS; selecting only the front camera allows 60 FPS. BMW’s ACE 2.0 specification lists a 150° view.

Light-sensitive sensors help the cameras work across changing light, but resolution and sensor descriptions do not guarantee a readable plate or a complete account of every incident.

Event sensing, parking and location

ACE 2.0 uses radar sensing and a G-sensor to respond to movement and impacts. Driving and parking modes serve different recording tasks. The rear camera adds a view behind the car; check the supplied camera configuration rather than assuming a front-only kit includes it.

GPS and GLONASS support location information. ACE 2.0 can include speed and GPS coordinates in recordings, depending on the country settings, and its app includes location functions. A sensor-triggered recording can be useful after damage or an incident, but no dash cam records every possible event. Parking duration also depends on the installation, settings and available power.

Storage and the ACE app

Recordings are stored on a microSD card. The ACE 2.0 manual documents a 32 GB card and separate recording categories. Confirm the approved card and what comes with the kit before buying.

The camera’s controls handle recording, image capture and the microphone. The ACE app connects locally over Wi-Fi for settings and footage access, including saving useful files to the phone. Local Wi-Fi is not remote internet viewing. Check current app availability and phone compatibility for ACE 2.0 before committing to the accessory. The BMW ACE 2.0 manual says the driver must not use the app while the engine is running or while driving.

If your BMW already has ACE 2.0, start by checking whether its recording and app access meet your needs. If you are considering an installation, confirm fit and current app support first. Compare a separate dash cam if higher front resolution, different parking modes or remote access matter more. Compare the installed package and ongoing connectivity costs, rather than assuming a dealer option always costs more.

BlackVue DR900X Plus as an alternative

The BlackVue DR900X-2CH Plus is a different generation from the DR970X pictured later in this guide. The original DR900X Plus combines an 8 MP front sensor with a 2.1 MP rear sensor, recording 4K UHD in front and 1080P FHD at the rear at 30 FPS. A 4K UHD frame has four times the pixel count of 1080P FHD; that is not a guarantee of four times the usable detail in every scene.

Higher front resolution

Choose the higher-resolution front recording if that is a priority, while accounting for storage and file-transfer needs. Exposure, movement, distance and lighting still affect what the footage shows.

Motion and impact parking recording

The DR900X Plus supports parking recording triggered by motion or impact, with buffered event recording. It needs an appropriate parking-power setup; enabling a recording mode does not supply power by itself.

BlackVue parking power and connectivity

Voltage monitoring is built into the camera

With the correct hardwiring installation, the DR900X Plus can use its battery-protection settings to shut down according to the selected voltage and timer. A separate low-voltage controller is not required for that built-in function, but the proper cable, installation and settings are still required. A cutoff reduces discharge exposure; it cannot guarantee that every vehicle battery will start.

Nearby Wi-Fi and remote Cloud are different

Built-in dual-band Wi-Fi supports nearby app access, and Bluetooth-assisted Seamless Pairing helps with setup. GPS supports recorded location information. Actual transfer speed depends on the connection and phone, not just the Wi-Fi band.

BlackVue Cloud needs a separate working internet connection, such as a suitable hotspot or compatible connectivity module, plus the required account and service. Module compatibility, SIM/data service, coverage and current feature plans need checking separately. Local Wi-Fi alone does not provide remote monitoring.

Thinkware U1000 as an alternative

The Thinkware U1000 is another separate aftermarket option. Its front camera supports 4K UHD at 30 FPS or 2K QHD at 60 FPS; the rear records 2K QHD at 30 FPS in either configuration. These are U1000 specifications, not U1000 Plus specifications.

Recording and low-light features

Thinkware’s U1000 specification lists an 8.42 MP Sony STARVIS front sensor and Super Night Vision 2.0. For night driving, compare sample footage with the lighting and vehicle speeds you expect.

Front and rear coverage

The listed diagonal views are 150° in front and 156° at the rear. Adjustable camera angles help position the view for the windshield and rear glass. Confirm whether the quoted package includes the rear camera, mounting parts and CPL filter.

U1000 parking modes and alerts

Energy Saving changes the recording trade-off

In Energy Saving mode, the U1000 waits for an impact and then records. That differs from the pre-event coverage available in motion-detection parking mode. An optional compatible radar module changes how the camera wakes for a possible event. Thinkware says it detects vehicles of sedan size or larger, not people passing by.

Parking mode requires the correct power installation. We would select the mode around the footage you need, not a universal runtime multiplier: battery condition, temperature, settings and connected accessories affect duration. Energy Saving disables THINKWARE CLOUD features, so choose the mode before relying on remote alerts.

Our follow-up U1000 review.

GPS and driver alerts

Built-in GPS supports location information. The U1000 also offers safety-camera alerts and driver-assistance warnings, including lane-departure and forward-collision alerts. Availability and usefulness depend on settings, GPS reception and applicable camera data. These are driving aids, not a replacement for attention to the road.

U1000 app and connected features

The U1000 manual describes nearby phone playback and settings through THINKWARE CLOUD. Its connected functions include vehicle location, geofencing and impact notifications when the required internet connection, account and network settings are in place.

For remote notifications, confirm current app support, service availability and the selected parking mode before buying.

Which setup would we choose?

Start with fit and recording coverage, then decide how you want to use the footage. If your BMW’s existing recorder meets your needs, an accessory may duplicate functions. If you want a separate system, compare the installed front/rear package, parking power, nearby app access and any remote-service requirements.

Keep the model generation and package clear when comparing a quote. Confirm the camera views, parking-power cable, optional modules and total installed cost.

Common BMW recording questions

Does ACE 2.0 fit every BMW?

Do not assume universal fit. Have a BMW specialist check the vehicle, accessory part number, rear-camera installation and required wiring before purchase.

Is ACE 2.0 the same as Drive Recorder?

No. ACE 2.0 is a separate accessory camera system; Drive Recorder uses the built-in cameras on suitably equipped vehicles. Export options and availability depend on the actual vehicle and software.

Can I check ACE 2.0 footage from anywhere?

Its local Wi-Fi app connection is for a nearby phone. Do not treat that as internet-based remote viewing. Compare a connected dash cam separately if remote access is essential.

Will parking mode protect the battery and record everything?

No setup guarantees either outcome. Check the selected mode, installation, battery condition and cutoff settings, then confirm what footage that mode records.
