VIOFO A129 Pro 4K Dash Cam Review

Our take: useful front detail with familiar controls

We would keep a working A129 Pro Duo if its recordings, card and parking-power setup still meet your needs. Its appeal is straightforward: 4K UHD front video, a separate rear view and a built-in screen for setup and playback. You can manage footage locally without depending on a cloud account.

This review covers the original A129 Pro Duo, not the A129 Plus Duo or a newer Pro model. The front and rear cameras have different resolutions and sensors. A higher front resolution does not give the rear camera the same detail, and neither view guarantees a readable plate in every encounter.

For an existing camera, we would first check a recent daytime clip, a night clip and a parking clip. That tells you more about whether the installation is doing its job than choosing a recording setting by its headline number alone.

Compare the current VIOFO range

Screen, controls and the two camera views

The two-inch LCD is useful if you prefer physical controls to a phone app. Use live view while parked to aim the lens, then check that recording resumes after leaving the menu. The screen adds a visible body beneath the mount, so compare its position with your mirror and sightline before fixing the adhesive.

The front camera uses Sony’s IMX317 sensor; the rear uses the IMX291. VIOFO lists a 130° front field of view and 160° rear field of view. We would judge the installed result through the actual glass: reflections, tint and the rear-window layout can change what the camera sees.

The earlier A129 Duo and A119 V3 are separate models. Similar housings or family names do not establish that a mount, firmware file or camera accessory will work on the Pro.

Recording modes: resolution and FPS are a choice

At its highest full-height front setting, the A129 Pro records 3840 × 2160 at 30 FPS. The rear records 1920 × 1080. If the front view matters most, that is a useful starting point; check the actual clips before reducing resolution or increasing bitrate.

Dual-camera recording is not limited to 30 FPS at every front resolution. The model’s manual also lists 2560 × 1440 at 60 FPS with the rear at 30 FPS. That option trades front pixel dimensions for more frames. It does not turn the rear stream into 60 FPS.

WDR helps balance bright and dark areas. We would not treat a “night vision” label as a promise that moving plates will stay sharp: available light, movement, exposure and windshield reflections still matter. The current model specification lists HDR as unsupported; do not borrow HDR capabilities from another VIOFO camera.

The original review compared four bitrate choices: Low, Medium, High and Maximum. Higher bitrate uses more storage; it does not guarantee a useful improvement in every scene. Its old one-minute file-size measurements describe those examples, not a fixed retention time for your card, firmware or selected streams.

Rear coverage and reusing existing parts

The rear camera provides a separate 1080P FHD view through the back glass. Keep the lens clear of trim and check reflections and defroster lines in a saved clip. Front and rear files are separate, so preserve both when an incident involves another vehicle approaching or leaving behind you.

VIOFO groups the A129 Duo and A129 Pro Duo together for its rear-cable option, while the A129 Plus cable is a separate version. If you are upgrading an existing A129 installation, send us the rear-camera label and connector photos before buying replacement parts. A matching cable selection is not proof that every A129-family camera is interchangeable.

The manual allows a compatible interior infrared camera in place of the rear camera. That changes which view you record; it does not add a third simultaneous channel. Check the exact interior-camera and lead combination rather than assuming a newer cabin camera will connect.

Parking recording: choose the footage you want to keep

The A129 Pro offers three parking modes. Auto Event Detection includes a buffer: the manual describes footage from 15 seconds before movement to 30 seconds after the event. That can provide useful context before a trigger, provided the camera remains powered and the event is detected.

Time lapse records continuously at a reduced frame rate without audio. Low-bitrate mode records continuously from both cameras with audio in smaller files. We would choose low bitrate when reviewing a continuous sequence matters more than keeping only detected events, and time lapse when an overview of a long stay is more useful than ordinary-speed playback.

These modes still depend on power, card space, settings and temperature. Parking mode is recording assistance, not a guarantee that every incident will be captured. Review a short parked test and the resulting files after installation, especially before relying on it overnight.

For automatic parking operation, VIOFO specifies the Mini-USB HK3 ACC hardwire kit. Its voltage cutoff stops the camera when the configured threshold is reached. It does not guarantee that an ageing or lightly charged vehicle battery will start. HK4 is a different Type-C product; do not choose it solely because another VIOFO uses it.

The earlier review compared this camera with the Thinkware U1000 and BlackVue DR900S. If remote notifications or radar-assisted parking are priorities, compare the exact model, required accessories and service conditions separately. Those features do not belong to the A129 Pro Duo.

Heat: keep the operating limit in perspective

The A129 Pro uses a capacitor power design. That helps it shut down and finish a file after external power is removed; it is not a battery for extended recording without vehicle power. It also does not make the camera immune to a hot cabin.

VIOFO’s manual advises switching the camera off if the cabin exceeds 60°C and recommends time lapse for outdoor summer parking. We would follow that advice rather than treating the specification’s upper temperature figure as a promise of uninterrupted parking recording.

If the camera repeatedly beeps, restarts or stops saving clips, let it cool safely and preserve any important files before troubleshooting. Check the card, power supply and exact-model firmware with support. A warm housing alone does not identify the cause, and a forum report cannot establish that every recording fault is overheating.

GPS, local Wi-Fi and getting a clip off the camera

The GPS mount can add speed and route data and calibrate the clock when a GPS signal is available. Set the correct time zone and adjust it for daylight saving time. Check the date and time in a saved file rather than assuming GPS has corrected every setting.

Dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi connects a nearby phone to the camera through the VIOFO app. It is a local connection for preview, settings and downloads. It is not cloud access, an internet hotspot or a way to receive a parking alert while you are elsewhere.

Transfer speed depends on the phone, connection and file. We would avoid using the old review’s transfer-rate examples as a download-time promise. Copy the needed files while parked, then confirm the copies play before deleting anything from the card.

Storage, playback and maintenance

The current A129 Pro manual supports a card up to 512GB, updating the original review’s 256GB limit. Use a suitable endurance card from a reliable source and format it in the camera for first use. Back up important clips before formatting, because formatting erases them.

Higher resolution, bitrate and a second camera all affect how much footage fits before loop recording replaces old files. Rather than promising a fixed number of hours, we would check a sample of your actual front and rear files and leave enough capacity for the time between downloads.

The protection button and G-sensor can lock an incident clip against ordinary loop recording. A locked file is still on the same card; formatting or card failure can destroy it. Save the front and rear originals somewhere else as soon as it is safe.

The original review discussed H.265 alongside standard H.264 playback. Codec support varies by device and software, so check an actual file on the computer or phone you will use. Keep its original file as well as any converted sharing copy. There is no fixed rule that a 4K UHD file will occupy the space of a 1080P FHD file.

Our recommendation for an existing owner or a replacement purchase

We like this model for someone who wants front detail, rear context and a screen without cloud features. If yours is recording reliably, a correctly aimed installation, maintained card and sensible parking-power plan may be more useful than replacing it just for a newer name.
