Overview

DOD RC500S Dual Channel

DOD's flagship dashcams continue to offer some of the best video quality on the market. The RC500S shakes the DOD lineup by introducing a sleek 2 channel, wifi compatible system to it's roster. Thanks to its combination of Japanese 6-element glass lenses, Sony STARVIS sensors, and Wide Dynamic Range compatible firmware (up to ISO12800), the RC500S is able to capture crystal clear footage with amazing low-light sensitivity.

The RC500S is built around a supercapacitor system, making it one of the few "Chinese/Taiwanese" Dash Cams to be capable of a more robust Parking mode. The integrated GPS allows the RC500S to log location and speed data at an industry leading 10Hz for utmost accuracy as well as provide the driver with Speed Camera alerts! Those looking for a 2 channel system focused purely on video & build quality should definitely check out the DOD RC500S!

FAQ

What is Parking Mode?

Parking mode is offered on most of the dash cams available at BlackboxMyCar. While it is important to protect your vehicle while driving, it is just as important to have your vehicle protected while it is parked. When the dash cam is in parking mode, footage will only be saved when there is an impact and/or motion. Parking mode can be enabled with a hardwiring kit or a battery pack.

For more information on parking mode, click here.

What is a Hardwire Kit?

A hardwiring kit enables parking mode. It allows your dash cam to remain powered on even when the vehicle's ignition is turned off. Installation is a breeze as you will only need to find an accessory fuse, constant fuse, and a grounding point.

What is a Battery Pack?

Most customers purchase the battery pack to avoid using the vehicle’s battery to power their dash cam. The battery pack is charged by either being hardwired into an accessory fuse or by being plugged into one of the vehicle's 12-volt cigarette sockets. We recommend the hardwiring the battery pack as it charges the battery pack quicker.

For more information on Battery Packs, click here.

How much footage will my memory card store?

On average, a 2-channel dash cam writes 16GB/hour and a 1-channel dash cam writes about 8GB/hour.

Click here to see all the memory cards we carry.

Do I need a Rear Camera?

Accidents or events don't always happen at the front of the vehicle! Having a rear camera provides coverage for any events or accidents that may happen at the rear of the vehicle.

For more information on rear view cameras, click here.

Do I need a IR Rear Camera?

An IR camera is designed to record the interior of the vehicle in low light conditions. This option is very popular among rideshare drivers.

For more information on why rideshare drivers need dash cams, click here.

What is a CPL filter?

A CPL filter attaches to the dash cam lens to eliminate lens flares, light reflections, and windshield glares.

For more information on CPL filters, click here.

DOD RC500S 2-CH Dash Cam impressions

We purchased this camera for one reason: low light video quality for the front-facing camera. This is a high-end product with a quality build that justifies the premium price. We are pleased with the night time parking lot images that provide police with enough facial detail to identify persons of interest who plague our neighbourhood summer and winter with trespass, B&E and auto theft (arctic climate here, so we use a battery tender to keep 12VDC supplied beneath the hood of our Passat). We are also pleased with the daytime colour rendition provided by the included polarizing filter which, by the way, significantly reduces windshield glare and reflections. Curiously, we found the advertised features did not ship with the included firmware and needed to update that firmware to the latest release. Also, the update info on the DOD website will not warn you that when updating the firmware the camera will remain silent for what seems like an inordinate amount of time—do nothing until you hear the new pleasant voice advise the operation has completed successfully! The mobile app and its desktop companion provide all the useful features found in competing products in this premium category. This being a new form factor and image processor and sensor for DOD we took the precaution of purchasing additional warranty coverage from BlackBoxMyCar. We have used DOD cameras for almost 10 years and expect this newest model to offer the same level of reliability as our other units still in service.

Hi Garry, thank you very much for taking the time to write your detailed review! We're glad to hear that you're happy with your new RC500S!
