FAQ

What is a dash cam?

A dash cam stands for a dashboard camera that is mounted inside the vehicle, usually on the front windshield. A dash cam, depending on the model, can do many things such as record both when the vehicle is being driven and when it’s parked, record audio, provide a connection to a smartphone app so that video can be reviewed and saved on the spot, etc.

What is an IR dash cam?

An IR dash cam is a dash cam with infrared lights that provide recording details under poorly-lit conditions, as well as total darkness. These are dual-channel dash cam setups with a regular front-facing unit and a secondary unit that comes with infrared lights.

The secondary unit is typically mounted to face and record the interior of the vehicle, and thus is especially recommended for rideshare users, such as for Uber and Lyft, or for commercial use, such as fleet managers.

Why buy a premium dash cam?

There are a few reasons as to why this is the case, and these reasons make a huge difference. Learn more about premium features including design, parking mode, smartphone integration, 4K UHD video resolution, g-force, ADAS, memory card storage and more.

What is parking mode?

Parking mode recording is a feature of a dash cam that keeps your dash cam recording footage even when the vehicle is off. Typically found only in premium dash cams, parking mode provides around-the-clock protection and surveillance for the vehicle.

What is Wi-Fi & GPS?

The wi-fi feature in a dash cam is what allows a smartphone to be paired to the dash cams. Unlike a regular wi-fi network signal that gives you internet access, the purpose here is just to connect the dash cam and smartphone together.

The GPS feature in a dash cam shows the vehicle’s speed and, for some models, the location of the vehicle with Google Maps integration.

Thinkware Q800 Pro

Awesome and perfect device . Just wished it had a built in screen. Besides that it handles all areas that a dash cam should and more

Hi Jamall, thanks for leaving a review. We're sorry to hear that you found the Thinkware app to be a bit difficult to use. The method of getting videos off the device is quite similar across most dash cams across the market today, but the best way that we've found to transport videos off the device is removing your SD card and putting it into your SD card reader on your computer instead. If you have any other questions, please reach out to our team at info@blackboxmycar.com. Hope you enjoy the Q800PRO!

Great setup and excellent service!

Very clean and professional Q800PRO 2 channel hardwire install by BlackboxMyCar. Only took a couple hours and everything is nicely hidden. Cameras are working perfectly and am very happy with the video quality and the features.

One thing I would like (and the reason I can't give a perfect 5 stars) is some greater flexibility in the software settings. Right now, verbal notifications are sort of all or nothing and I find it a bit chatty when enabled, especially on startup. Would be nice to be able to enable/disable individual notifications so you can decide to hear what is important to you.

Parking mode seems to be working well although I find the motion detection to be too sensitive. I have it set to lowest sensitivity (no disable option) but it usually reports "more than 10" incidents, even in quiet parking areas. Nobody is going to review that many video clips (x 2 cameras in my case) every time they get back to their car. Impact detection is good and typically reports one incident (detects when I close the trunk). Again, in the software, it would be nice to be able to turn motion detection completely off, but retain the buffered impact detection. Really, I'm only interested in actual impacts.

Auto-connection to smartphone when in the presence of a known hotspot may also be a nice feature. This would make quick review of captured events a little more convenient.

None of these minor gripes are a deal killer by any means. I like the ability to customize, but the software is a bit limiting in this respect. Hopefully may be addressed in future updates to get that 5 star rating!

Overall, very happy and would recommend the Q800PRO and BlackboxMyCar to anyone looking for a quality dashcam setup.

Camera quality is good. Phone application is terrible.

I've had this system for almost 2 months. I enjoy the camera system - both front and back are clear and the added speed indicator (if enabled) is accurate as far as I can tell.

That said, the phone application experiences I've had have not been great. First, the application requires too many immediate phone permissions for me to feel comfortable. As of this writing (Oct 05, 2019), it needs: Storage access (which is OK as you save video's etc, but I wish it let you use the application until you actually needed to save a file), Location information (why?), and battery access to allow the application to run in the background (again, why?). Why does this application need location data off of my phone + the requirement that it runs in the background? It simply won't let you use the app until it gets those permissions. It seems nefarious.

I wanted to change some settings, like when it announces that it's recording when you start your car, so I needed something. I found a burner phone, loaded a new profile and gave the app permissions, but only on that phone. Then the next set of problems began.

First, it took over an hour getting my phone connected with the camera. Each time I'd add it, the application would hang up. I cleared cached / reinstalled etc to no avail. I'm not sure exactly what i did in the end to make it work, but it's been connecting ever since. Once connected, the I found that the live streaming feature is amazingly bad. The video is constantly stuttering and attempting to catch-up, but never does. This is also true when you're attempting to watch a video recording. It's constantly lagging, stuttering, and generally a bad experience. The reason this is especially painful is because of the false positives that the "Impact Detection" feature gives. It's fine that it gives some false positives (even on the lowest sensitivity setting), but it's the reviewing/deleting cycle you have to do periodically. If the video stream is constantly buffering, it's hard...
