Pedestrian Struck by Car at Crosswalk (Vancouver, B.C.)

Yet another dash cam video caught by a friend of BlackboxMyCar has been making headlines, this time with much more graphic footage. This video was caught on the Blackvue DR650GW-1CH dash cam on the busy 6-lane Granville Street in Vancouver.

In the video, you can see that a pedestrian runs into a crosswalk and is struck by a Mercedes driving down the leftmost lane. There were multiple vehicles stopped in the lane to the right of the cammer and behind him as well, but the Mercedes did not notice this and proceeded through the crosswalk. To make matters worse, the pedestrian seemed to be in a hurry and did not seem to see the vehicle coming either so she continued to jog into the crosswalk. Commenters online also mentioned that the driver was driving towards the sun which negatively affected their visibility and that the crosswalk on a 6-lane street should have some form of flashing lights to alert drivers. While this does not excuse the driver's inattentiveness, the dash cam footage further highlights just how poor the visibility at this intersection/crosswalk was at the time. Perhaps this incident will prompt changes that can improve pedestrian safety along Vancouver streets.

Intersection Glare

Our friend, who was a witness on scene and provided the dash cam footage to Police, informed us that the driver was conscious after about a minute and had movement in her extremities. Global News reports that the 50 year old pedestrian was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and that she is in stable condition.
